Leaving Comfort Behind!

For the past 3 years, I’ve wanted to get out and run with the national running group, Black Girls Run.  I’ve considered, pondered, almost made it to a group run, and ultimately always shied away. It’s been nearly 3 years since I’ve seriously engaged in outdoor running, and I’m one who likes to be at the top of my game before I carry myself out with a group of folks.  I don’t like being the rookie and I certainly don’t like finishing in last place…I’m only slightly competitive.  On MOnday, I decided that I was going to venture out of my comfort zone and tag along with the local BGR group for a run.  I promise you this was one of the best decisions I could have made for my life.

It was refreshing to be around professional women of color who get together for the sole purpose of encouraging each other to reach our health and fitness goals.  One of the girls in the group has been running for exactly one year today, another is a walker who has been with many groups but has found a good fit with the BGR ladies, another was a newbie to the group like me (we stuck together and did well!), and others have run half-marathons and the like.  It was a nice mix of ladies.  All levels of runners and walkers were welcomed…I did two miles of rolling hills, but met ladies who were doing three miles.  I felt comfortable with my two, but left with a short, long-term goal of conquering three miles on the crazy hills of my neighborhood.  It was a great time, and perhaps what I liked the most was that this group remained true to the BGR motto…no girl left behind!  All of us waited until the last lady finished her run.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel tonight because of the heat, but I’ve got my workout gear on and I’m headed to the gym to get my run on.  I aspire to be like one of my fellow runners tonight and get in no less than 3 miles!  After a single night of running, this group has inspired me to again press towards my fitness goals.  I feel like I can drop these extra pounds I’ve picked up, and I feel like I can be fit and fabulous by the time my birthday rolls around in a little over 6 months.

One step outside of my comfort zone has caused me to rethink my priorities and positioned me to get closer to reaching some personal goals.

Until next time…

  1. DAWN!!!

Great post! I’m inspired by your words and willingness to step out of your comfort zone. I just started back running 2 weeks ago. I stopped a year and a half ago. I have been afraid to join the BGR group near my home, fearing I could not keep up. Now I have the courage to do so.

    Thanks, I needed this!
